Judith E. Levy was commissioned by President Barack Obama on March 14, 2014, to serve as a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan. She previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan from 2000-2014, and as Chief of the Civil Rights Unit in that office from 2010-2014. She has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Michigan from 2002 to the present.
Judge Levy received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1981, and her law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1996. She served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Bernard A. Friedman from 1996-1999.
Notable Case: Judge Levy approved a $626 million settlement with tens of thousands of people in Flint, Michigan, who sued the state and others after their drinking water was tainted by lead. Un a 178-page decision, U.S. District Judge Judith Levy said the settlement was a “remarkable achievement” because it creates a compensation program for everyone hurt by the tainted water, regardless of whether they were part of a class-action lawsuit or sued the state on their own.
