Hon. Amos L. Mazzant, III

Amos Mazzant currently serves as Chief United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Texas, Sherman Division. Judge Mazzant was appointed as a U.S. District Judge on December 19, 2014. He served as a U.S. Magistrate Judge in Sherman from April of 2009 until the date of his current appointment. Prior to his position as U.S. Magistrate Judge, Judge Mazzant served as a Justice on the Fifth District Court of Appeals at Dallas.

Prior to that, Judge Mazzant served as a briefing attorney for twelve years for Judges Paul Brown, Robert Faulkner, and Don D. Bush. Judge Mazzant also worked in private practice at Wolfe, Tidwell & McCoy, P.C., in Sherman, Texas. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.A. in 1987 and from Baylor Law School in 1990. Judge Mazzant served as the President of the Texas Young Lawyers Association and as a Director for the State Bar of Texas.

In 2002, the Baylor Law Alumni Association named Judge Mazzant its Baylor University Young Lawyer of the Year, and in 2024, Judge Mazzant was honored as the 2024 Baylor Lawyer of the Year. Judge Mazzant is a lifetime member of the Baylor Law Alumni Association.

Judge Mazzant was appointed in 2021 by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., to serve on the Judicial Conference Committee on the Administration of the Magistrate Judges System; he was reappointed in 2024. Judge Mazzant also currently serves as the Chairperson on the Fifth Circuit Court Administration Committee.

In 2022, Judge Mazzant was named Judge of the Year by the Dallas Chapter of ABOTA. In 2024, Judge Mazzant was honored as TEX-ABOTA Jurist of the Year. Judge Mazzant assumed the role of chief judge of the Eastern District of Texas on March 1, 2025.
